New York at Rest video shoot

New York at Rest video shoot

I’ve talked about this, but there’s not much that makes my skin crawl more than taking posed pictures and videos. Unfortunately, when selling clothing, you have to create visual content (shocking..) and people like to see how it looks on a person (more shocking…). So you have two options: 1) Pay a model or 2) suck it up, put it on, and get in front of the camera. I guess the third option is to convince a friend to dedicate the better half of a day to helping you, which I’ve also done. Given we’re trying to spend money wisely… Models, you’re going to have to wait.

So when it came to our most recent video shoot, it was up to me again to strike a pose and make some content. Luckily, I have a great girlfriend and a good friend who were willing to provide their good looks so that the kinda handsome instagram does not become a personal model portfolio.

This video shoot was for the “New York at Rest” clothing items. There’s a hat that already dropped about 2 months ago and there’s a shirt coming out in about a month. I knew a video shoot was necessary for this because the whole idea behind the concept are those moments in New York that balance out the chaos. Capturing those moments would be necessary to share the feeling I want you to feel when you wear the clothing.

The goal was to think of those small, sometimes seemingly insignificant, moments of life in New York and bring attention to them. Whether that be sitting at a coffee shop, being in the park, waiting for the subway, etc.

We started in Soho around 9:00 a.m. The great part about Soho is that it has some of the best architecture and the shops don’t open until 11 a.m on the weekends. So even though it is one of the busiest places during the day and streets like Broadway are avoided by locals like the plague (or Times Square, which is the plague), it is one of the quietest parts of town in the early parts of the morning. Thus, we were able to capture about 1.5 hours of Soho related scenes without many people around. As the streets started to fill up, we slowly moved to West Village before making our way back to the apartment for a quick change. From there we made our way through the park briefly before taking the subway to Brooklyn for some final shots on my friends roof. We got really lucky a few times throughout the day such as catching a subway that was practically empty. Can’t say I would have been able to gather the guts to take pictures in a crowded subway. We finished around 1 pm… just in time for football.

My videographer, Katie (@ktlovelace), who is amazing, will have most of the content edited in the next couple weeks and I can’t wait to share. At the end of the day, I want people to wear the  “New York at Rest” clothing during those times when they’re taking a moment to relax. I hope that the content we created reminds people of a few of their favorite ways of doing so.
