Planning a photoshoot

Planning a photoshoot

I’ve talked a lot about my mindset and the different things I think about while starting a clothing brand. I’m a very introspective person so it’s no surprise that’s where my writing goes a lot of the time.

Today will be a little different and I’ll talk about the process of putting together a photoshoot. Content is definitely king in this day and age and as much as you can capture a lot of good content with just your phone and some POV filming, it goes a long way to bring in the professionals. Particularly from an ecommerce perspective, customers aren’t able to walk into a store and feel your product so the main way they build trust in what they're buying is visually. No one is going to buy a product unless they trust it’ll be worth it. So the behind the scenes and raw content is great, but professional photoshoots allow you to put out imagery and content that is high quality and, in return, that communicates your product is high quality to customers considering purchasing.

When I did our first photoshoot back in the Fall, I was extremely nervous going into it. I was first nervous because I knew this meant being in front of the camera and, even worse, in public. I don’t feel natural in front of the camera so the thought of “modeling” petrified me. Then I was made even more nervous once I realized what goes into a photoshoot. The photographer doesn’t just show up and everyone goes off and takes a bunch of pictures. Everything has to be planned out beforehand including schedule, outfits, inspiration, desired output (edited photos), etc. I just hadn’t realized how much I would have to think ahead, which I try to avoid in life as much as possible…

So now we have our next photoshoot coming up to capture the “summer appropriate” clothes given our last one was focused on the sweatshirts. My vision for this one is to really play on the name and capture moments that juxtapose having it together with not having it together. If that doesn’t make sense, hopefully it will when you see the pictures…

Luckily this time I don't think we will need to use studio time, which is another component to consider if needed during a photoshoot. Last time we did and it went smoothly, but you have to pretty much plan the rest of the shoot around the time slot you were able to book for the studio time for and have to make sure you make the most of that studio time too since it's an added cost.

If you’re reading this and have any ideas of “scenes” that would depict this kind of juxtaposition then let me know! I would love to include some of your ideas into the shoot.
